Project of the month - March 2023

Upcycling a Singapore Airlines 3-seater with Rubio Monocoat

Upcycling, it’s stylish, ecological and gives unique results. So naturally, it’s a trend that we love! Roger & Sons clearly feels the same way about it, because they set up a unique cooperation with Singapore Airlines. They upcycled original 3-seaters and galley carts from the airline and protected them with Oil Plus 2C.

Retired & repurposed

Just because some Airbus A380 planes were retired, doesn’t mean that it’s the end of their story. Six 3-seaters and a few galley carts were repurposed into a unique project by Roger & Sons. In an exclusive collaboration with Singapore Airlines, they recreated the pieces of furniture with repurposed local wood from The Local Tree Project. This project rehabilitates abandoned logs that are felled in Singapore, making this a twice recycled project!

Rubio Monocoat’s Oil Plus 2C was used to protect the furniture, to make sure it stands the test of time and gets to live a long second life.

Tip of the month: how to upcycle your wooden project

Do you have an upcycling project of your own that you want to treat with our Rubio Monocoat oil? Then it’s important to sand down the wood so that the wood fibres can molecularly bond with the oil.

The first step in this process is making sure you can actually sand the wood down enough. Is the wooden layer thick enough to be sanded? Is it for example solid wood or are you dealing with wood veneer? In the latter case, it might not always be possible to sand well enough and you run the risk of sanding too much.

Is the wood suitable for sanding? Then the easiest way to sand is by starting with a coarser screening net, for example 40 to 60. That way you can efficiently sand away the biggest part of the previous treatments. When you see that you’ve sanded away enough, you can switch to higher screening nets. With every higher screening net, you will be able to sand away the scratches that you made earlier. Working with screening net 80 will get you a nice result already, but the best screening net to finish with is 100 to 120.
